How to prioritize your health as a caregiver

Whether it's caring for an aging parent, managing a mental health disorder, coping with a traumatic injury, or supporting a developmental disability, nearly a quarter of adults serve as caregivers. A caregiver is someone who aids someone unable to complete daily tasks on their own. Caring for a loved one often requires deep sacrifices, and it's easy to forget your own needs as you devote yourself entirely to their well-being. Focusing on yourself may make you feel as though you’re being selfish, but it’s necessary to make sure you’re also healthy and thriving. Here is a list of tips to take care of yourself.

  1. Exercise

Moving your body can increase your dopamine levels, leading to less stress. This can be done before your care recipient wakes up. It can be something short, such as 15-minute pilates or yoga, or even just a walk around the block. Adding this a few times a week or even daily can help boost your mental health.

  1. Ask for help

You may feel like you have to do everything yourself but this isn’t true. Reaching out to other family members, friends, or even just a neighbor can help you tremendously. This can include asking for help with grabbing food, checking on your care recipient during the day while you’re at work, or just helping with small chores.

  1. Pursue hobbies

Having a life outside of solely taking care of your care recipient is extremely important as neglecting yourself can lead to resentment. Getting involved in hobbies that you can easily do without having to leave the house often can add to your life. Hobbies such as crocheting, reading, or painting can be easily picked up and rewarding.

As a caregiver, your priority may be the person under your care but it's essential to also prioritize your own well-being. Looking after yourself helps you keep caring for others and stay mentally strong. Therapy can help you develop coping mechanisms and recognize the signs of becoming overwhelmed.
