If you have ADHD you might struggle with focusing and completing tasks, this can make working an onsite job difficult. While it may be easier to create a system that works for you at home for chores, working in a different environment that you can’t fully control may make your ADHD even worse making it difficult to stay on task. How can you better manage your ADHD while in a workplace environment? Here are a few tips to be as successful at work.

Tips for ADHD at work

  1. Quiet

If your job allows it, wearing noise-canceling headphones can minimize audio distractions, allowing you to focus on your work. If not, and if it’s an option, let your manager know you would like to work in a quiet area.

  1. Take a break

Adding short breaks to your routine throughout the workday can help you decrease stress. This can be stretching your legs for a few minutes every hour to get your blood flowing or grabbing a small snack to maintain steady blood sugar levels and keep your mind sharp and energized.

  1. Clear space

Making sure your desk or workplace is clean and neat can help you focus and set yourself up for success. If you have a lot of clutter, you might become stressed or distracted by whatever is on your desk.

  1. Therapy

Regular therapy can help you discuss your issues with a professional who can recommend behavior modification techniques that work best for your circumstances.

  1. Medication

If you feel it’s right for you, medication can help you tremendously. You can work with a psychiatrist to explore the appropriate strength and type of medication needed and go through the process of seeing what medication works best for you.

ADHD doesn’t have to make work feel stifling or overwhelming. Taking these steps and meeting with a professional regularly can help you at work and in other aspects of your life.
