Seasonal Depression and how to cope

Winter can be an emotionally challenging time for many, often due to holiday stresses, a lull in activities, or you might be struggling with Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) commonly referred to as Seasonal Depression. Each year, countless individuals experience a dip in their mental well-being during the winter months, struggling with deep feelings of sadness or depression triggered by the change in weather. However, there are effective ways to mitigate the impact of winter on your mental health.

How to lessen your Seasonal Depression

  1. Vitamin D

Try to increase your exposure to sunlight daily, since Vitamin D is important for serotonin production and mood improvement. You can do this in a few different ways: going for a short walk, sitting by a window when doing hobbies, or adding Vitamin D supplements to your daily routine.

  1. Find Indoor activities

Some activities you may enjoy are outdoors, which can be difficult when the temperatures are low and being outside for long periods isn’t feasible. Consider starting an indoor hobby that you can enjoy year-round, such as crocheting, painting, and reading. Exploring new hobbies will let you focus on something when you can’t be outside and keep you occupied.

  1. Therapy

Discussing your feelings with a professional can help you gain a new perspective on your Seasonal Depression and different techniques to cope. There also might be an underlying reason why you have Seasonal Depression that a professional can help you identify, which can help you better manage your Seasonal Depression.

  1. Exercise

Adding a daily workout to your routine can help improve your mood exponentially because it increases your dopamine. If you don’t know where to start consider something like indoor yoga, using a walking pad, or pilates.

If you’re struggling with Seasonal Depression, getting therapy, especially before the middle of winter when it’s the worst, talking to a professional can help you learn how to cope with those feelings.
